Artist Statement
I am a full-time painter and writer. In 1998, I returned to the United States after six years in Florence, Italy. While there, I developed a keen interest in depicting the essence of things and found kindred spirits in Giotto and painters of the early Renaissance; the architecture and landscape also held myriad examples of this lack of superfluity. As a result, my paintings have increasingly focused on core compositional elements, on an investigation of color relationships, and on the interaction between abstracted and representational form, between flat space and the illusion of space. My objective is to make paintings where references to the natural world, through a studied simplification of formal components, become images of stillness and harmony.
