Artist Statement
Judy Chicago introduced me to the politics of Feminist Art in her book, Through the Flower. When she took a group of women art students to a studio outside the male-dominated art department of Fresno State, she told them they were going to make art about their lives and their experiences as women.
This was an extraordinary political statement, because to that point in the art (and literary) world, women's lives were seen as unimportant, except as they intersected with and supported men's lives.
From that book and the Women's Art class that assigned its reading, I received permission to make paintings about my childhood relationship with my parents, my yearning to be beautiful, my friendships with other women, the sterility of my first marriage, and the bounty of my second.
Feminist politics is broad; it doesn't just focus on women's place in society; it says, our individual lives are important, they are interesting, they are productive, they are instructive.
More work by Hendrickson can be seen in the Women Against Violence section.
