Artist Statement

Line is the most basic element of vision, as it reveals rhythm, movement and spirituality. Color enhances the vision and stimulates emotions. Prior to starting work, I meditate. This allows me to encounter my spirit to communicate with my feelings and translate them into line and color.

An illness in Japan resulted in two close encounters with death. Heightened intensity of my consciousness of life and spirit was the result of these experiences.

Reading the philosophy of the 1927 Nobel Prize recipient, Henry Bergson, gave me the direction for my art. Bergson’s philosophy—“Durée Pure” and “Elan Vital”— has deepened my own appreciation of the significance of the intuition and inner spirit of human beings.
