Artist Statement
My work is best described as Magic Realism. Using realism (or) realist technique, it is my aim to make the improbable, dreamlike or fantastic narratives in my work plausible and convincing. I am attracted to the work of other artists associated with Magic Realism, like John Wilde and Gertrude Abercrombie, because they use narrative techniques so concisely. I’ve also borrowed from the intimate stylistic details of Mexican retablos and ex-votos. However, the Surrealists, particularly the women painters associated with Surrealism, are the greatest inspirations for my work. The artists Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning have influenced me with their imaginative reflections upon personal experiences and dreams. I believe their collective vision is a powerful, unique and truthful expression of a women’s perspective, and my passion is to carry the torch for their unfinished work. Intelligent, thoughtful, humorous, skilled, brave, different from the rest: these are adjectives I offer in my own artwork.
