Artist Statement
My current paintings explore the relationship of nature to the individual living in an urban environment. For me, one of the great joys is walking and exploring the urban and rural terrain. How water connects to rock, and ground to vegetation merges with the observer during these sojourns. The elements of nature inform and inspire my drawings and paintings along with the Japanese aesthetic of discovering a state of grace in the mundane and unnoticed. With respect to materials, I integrate transfer images of my drawings to maintain line quality in contrast with the painted surface. From studying Asian brush painting, I incorporate the fluidity of ink with the energy of urban and rural landscapes in a series of invented maps and scrolls. Consequently, as daylight is shifting and fog unrolls, the questions that emerge for me are: What are the deeper lessons of observation and beauty? How can we step up from wonderment to mindful action in our lives?
