Artist Statement
These pictures came from dreams. They were partly triggered by personal experience and partly by angry irritation at hearing that sanctimonious phrase "She must have done something to deseerve it" whenever a woman was raped, regardless of the extremes of age. Newspapers are full of these horrible stories to reinforce our own experiences. The picture of the baby has, unfortunately, also triggered awful remembrances in some who have seen it, and to those women I want to apologize. It is not an easy drawing to look at, and believe me, it was not an easy picture to draw. However, artists are not called on to only show "the true, the good, the noble, the beautiful" as my Mother and Grandmother used to tell me. We must also scream and shout and bellow our protesting cries.
