VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENCE
VIEW THE PORTFOLIO
"Women and Violence" is a syntax that has profound meaning
for all women. Every one of us has been either a victim of violence or
the friend or relative of women who have been the target of violent aggression.
Each of us lives with the threat and fear of violence. No woman is exempt.
The women artists represented in this portfolio have given voice to
their experience with violence. Subjects explored in this work reflect
on murder, rape, war, genocide, child abuse, assault, battering, slavery,
stalking, family and/or partner violence, exploitation, humiliation,
denial of civil rights, and gender inequities.
Women & Violence PortfoliO
This presentation is made as a "portfolio." As such, it includes
examples of works about women and violence that 24 artist members of
the NCWCA have created. We hope that viewers will take time to explore
their (virtual) images and individual statements. Resumes are available
for most of the artists and are linked by hypertext with each artist's
page.

Violence against women is a violation of human rights
" We must give voice to women plagued by violence in all its forms. It
doesn't matter if it's by law or custom, ignorance or inaction. It
doesn't matter if it's in war or peace, in our
homes or our streets. No woman should ever be degraded by violence.
And violence against women must never again be pushed aside as trivial
or explained away as cultural.
Let us call it what it is. Violence against women is a violation
of human rights."
Hillary Rodham Clinton excerpted from remarks on International Women's
Day, March 11, 1998.
