The Ground Upon Which We Stand: A Regional Juried Art Exhibition
Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art – April 15-May 31, 2020
The past month has been a whirlwind of transition and uncertainty, and many are deeply affected by the Coronavirus crisis. Because the date to a return of normal socializing cannot be determined, The Ground Upon Which We Stand Exhibition is now an online experience at https://www.ncwca.org/the-ground-upon-which-we-stand-exhibition.html with an accompanying online store hosted by Abrams Claghorn Gallery, https://abramsclaghornshop.com/collections/the-ground-upon-which-we-stand?page=1.
Berkeley, CA, February April 15, 2020 – Seventy-seven artists speak out about the sacredness of the land and the importance of standing your ground in this era of climate change in The Ground Upon Which We Stand. This regional juried exhibition sponsored by the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art, a nonprofit, opens online on April 15, 2020 at Abrams Claghorn Gallery, 1215 Solano Ave., Albany CA.
In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, broken climate accord agreements, gutting of the EPA, record-breaking heat, and global conflagration, this show examines artists’ reactions to the sacredness of nature and the existential crisis of our time: global degradation. The Ground Upon Which We Stand also shines a spotlight on women's identities and their embodied experiences with planet Earth.
With works represented in all media, The Ground Upon Which We Stand offers messages to and from the planet through the artists’ examinations and responses to nature, environmental pressures, society and the fate of our only home, Planet Earth. The artworks engage on many levels – wonder, worry, hopefulness, activism. Some of the exhibit’s artists clearly oppose technology-industry-capitalism-globalization and advocate for a simpler way of life or a return to ancestral lifeways. Alternatively, some portray technology and globalization as compatible with environmental integrity, envisioning a future that ends pollution, over-crowding, and the extinction of species. Echoing Greta Thunberg’s call to action, The Ground Upon Which We Stand stresses that there is no plan B or planet B.
The Ground Upon Which We Stand exhibition is more relevant than ever, because the well-being of our planet is intricately interwoven with our own.
Stay tuned for:

About Abrams Claghorn Gallery
The Abrams Claghorn Gallery pairs a curated gallery space with a museum-style store that have exhibited and sold fine and functional artworks created by diverse Bay Area artists since April 2015. The Gallery hosts workshops that invite community members to learn about and work alongside the artists showcased in our exhibits. The Abrams Claghorn exhibition space has shown over 40 art shows by local, emerging artists since the Gallery opened in 2015. The Gallery’s thoughtfully planned exhibitions begin with the choice of a broad concept, such as human rights, current events, and issues of identity. These concepts materialize through the selection of artists that represent the ethnic and gender demographics of the Bay Area artist community. In this way, Abrams Claghorn aims to ensure that the undistorted voice of local artists is communicated to the public.
