MEMBER SOLO SHOWS & CURATORIAL TOURS
Updated February 10, 2026

Picture
Solo exhibitions or group exhibition curations are important milestones in an artist's career. We encourage members to plan and organize curatorial tours of their solo exhibitions or exhibitions. It is an opportunity to get your artwork seen and to present your body of work. If you would like to organize a curatorial tour for NCWCA members, please follow these procedures. We strongly urge you to plan ahead (approximately 1- 1.5 months before your show opens) to account for the approval and publicity process.

1. NCWCA will sponsor one tour (solo, duo, or curatorial) each month. Generally, the artists will be selected, first come, first served. However, if more than one person applies at the same time, preference may be given to the artist who has not given a tour before. The Professional Development Chair will make a final decision if a tiebreaker is necessary. If someone else is selected ahead of you, you can still publicize your exhibition through NCWCA’s website and newsletter.

2. All curators must be current NCWCA members and the exhibition must be a solo show, a duo show, or a show the member has curated. You qualify for a show no more than once every twelve months.

3. You are responsible for organizing the visit to the exhibition, collecting RSVPs, reserving a place for a no-host lunch, responding to member questions, introducing NCWCA as the sponsoring organization, and giving the curatorial tour.

4. The tour is intended as a benefit for NCWCA members. If you wish to add additional guests, such as potential new members, family members, or friends, that’s okay.

5. NCWCA will publicize the tour through chaptermail, list the event on the website, and add it to Instagram. You are also responsible for publicizing the event through social media channels.

6. The tour is given on Fridays, from 11am – 12 pm, with lunch to follow. Check the NCWCA calendar and look for a Friday that is open (no other NCWCA activity): https://www.ncwca.org/ncwca-calendar.html

7. After reviewing the above requirements, email Professional Development Chair Susan Kirshenbaum ([email protected]) to indicate you want to organize a curatorial tour. Provide her with your show's name, description, venue, address, and tour date/time.  She will check the calendar, check your membership status, and determine if your proposed tour meets our requirements. If all looks good, and the month is available, she will approve your request.

8. At the next chapter meeting, present and publicize your curatorial tour during Open Forum. This is a great opportunity to reach out to members about your upcoming tour.

9. Email Susan Kirshenbaum at [email protected], Chandrika Marla at chandrika[at]ncwca.org and Priscilla Otani at mrpotani[at]ncwca.org with the following mandatory information:
• Title of exhibit
• Brief description of the exhibition
• Name and address of gallery
• Date and time of the curatorial tour
• One jpg image of the show or artwork
• One jpg photo of yourself
• Your email and phone number for questions and RSVP

10. You are responsible for giving a brief statement about NCWCA before the tour begins. Susan can help you with the language.

11. If photos are taken at the event, please send them to [email protected] and [email protected]. Photos will be added to the website and social media.

You may provide additional information, such as a meet-up location and carpool instructions. But at the minimum, you must provide all the mandatory information in order for NCWCA to publicize your event. Susan will send a chaptermail to all members, Chandrika will set up a social media post, and Priscilla will add the event to the website. Members will be prompted to respond to you directly for questions and RSVPs. One or more NCWCA board members will endeavor to attend your special event.
