Inhabiting Blurred Divides: An exhibition on themes of womanhood, identity, and dualities.
As young women and artists, we all struggle with what it means to be a woman in this society: How do we fit in our communities, in academic institutions, in the larger arts community, and in our personal relationships? How are we received as leaders and artists? How do other identifiers such as race, sexuality, or class intersect with our identities as women? How are we perceived in relationship to men? How are we allowed to love, dream, create, inspire after a years of socialization? This exhibition examines the fundamental nature of womanhood and aims to respond to these questions. These works explore and question the dualities that seem to be inherent in female identity and the parameters that define womanhood in our society. Our intended audience is all people of every age and gender. We hope that other young women will identify with the struggles that inspire our art-making and that others will understand our perspectives we represent in our work and think critically about these themes.
