GROW October 25 Curatorial Tour by Marianne McGrath

Picture
On Friday, October 25, NCWCA Member Marianne McGrath led a members-only tour of GROW, her curatorial exhibition at the Palo Alto Art Center.

GROW presents twenty-two artists working across a variety of mediums, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installation and film. Together the works explore the gardens and green spaces that we share; the gardens from our memories, imagination and history; and the gardens that grow us towards a better future. Individually, works introduce sub-themes that consider climate, equity and sustainability, as well as our connections with the natural world and each other, our well-being and pleasure.

December 6 Stephanie Metz Solo Show Tour at the Triton

The Triton Museum of Art presents Stephanie Metz: In the Glow, an exhibition debuting a series of evocative fiber sculptures. Wool felt and body-like forms combined with reflected color explore themes of soft power, aesthetic perception, and the paradoxes of female life.
The free-standing and wall-mounted sculptures and immersive installation transcend stereotypical notions of textile art as decorative and domestic. Metz uses a nuanced abstract visual language to allude to the contradictions of a woman’s experiences— vulnerability and resilience, internal and external perceptions, and working within and against gender biases and expectations. The supple yet durable felt material used to make the sculptures reflect these contradictions, embodying both the tender and the tough.
When December 6, 11-12 pm, brown bag lunch afterwards

JANUARY 13, UNDERPINNING FOR YOUR PASTEL DRAWING
WORKSHOP WITH DIANE OLIVIER

Picture
At 1890 Bryant Street, San Francisco
This workshop was for artists who have some experience in pastels but would like to explore more options. Diane Oliver began with a demonstration showing three ways to start a drawing with underpinning. Participants then worked on three pieces that reflected different surfaces, different underpinning, different marks, then fleshed them out to see the comparisons. The session ended with a critique to review the results.
Diane Olivier, draw-er extraordinaire, moves between sketchbooks and pastel work, figures to landscapes, traditional to non-traditional materials. A long time teacher, she now leads classes and travel drawing workshops where she shares her techniques, lends her support and hosts groups in fabulous locations.
