2021 YWC CONTAINMENT: STORIES OF ART IN ISOLATION

Picture

Arc Project Gallery
1246 Folsom Street, San Francisco
July 10 - August 7, 2021

Bianca Lago, YWC President & NCWCA Board
Containment: Stories of Art in Isolation is an art exhibition in San Francisco, put on by the national Young Women’s Caucus (YWC) focusing on the work of emerging non-binary and women artists at Arc Gallery. Containment displays the work of artists during the pandemic. We asked creatives to consider what art-making during isolation looked like, did it alter their practice in any way? Our goal with the exhibition is to construct a cohesive narrative by stringing together all of these individual stories. We want to use moments like this to remind us all that we have more in common than not, that we are not alone in our experiences, even in the midst of lockdown and isolation. Now that we are reopening the city we would like to revisit last year’s experience one last time to bring us into re-opening feeling more connected and understanding of what we went through collectively. We hope that many get to see and reflect on the work that we have put together for this exhibit.

Dasha Matsuura Juror Statement

The last year and a half has affected each of us differently - from the deep joy of slowing down and allowing time to reflect, to the pain of loss and eminent reminders of our mortality. With the renewed senses of vulnerability, introspection and solitude, artists turned inward and to their immediate surroundings for inspiration. From Laurie Toby Edison's quiet photographs to Sarahminda Czajka's beautifully macabre mixed media works to Danielle Festa's joyful and masked portraits - each artist interpreted their time at home differently.

Dasha Matsuura is an Oakland-based curator. She is currently the director of Hashimoto Contemporary and Spoke Art. Since 2007, she has been an active member of the greater Bay Area arts community as a curator, corporate art consultant and has served on the board of various non-profit organizations.
