ART CRITIQUE GUIDELINES
NCWCA Critique Group Guidelines
Why? New offering to current members & a draw for prospective members.
What? A true critique of WIP or piece that is not working. This is not an art share. The artist is not the one speaking. Each round will have a theme, either a type of material or concept (ex. sculpture, conceptual art, glass work, painting, foundry, feminism, etc.)
When? Quarterly, in the evenings via Zoom. 7:00 PM on the fourth Wednesday of Jan, April, July, Oct. 1 hr & 15 min long. Next session is July 26, 2023.
Who? 6 artists sharing work, the crit leader, 1 critiquer “Guest Reviewer” (a special guest curator, professor, etc.), and any NCWCA members who would like to add to the discussion.
Who gets critiqued? Members submit their names in advance for a specific date. Six are chosen at random, with no repeats within a year unless there is space.
Who gives critiques: A Guest Reviewer, the crit leader, the sharing artists, and anyone other members who would like to join the discussion via the chat function. The Guest Reviewer will be knowledgeable on the theme of the crit.
How does it work?
● Open call for artists wanting their work critiqued and those wanting to participate in the discussion. (Crit leader arranges for the Guest Reviewer in advance.)
● 1 week before the crit, the 6 artists submit 1 artwork to the Lead, along with 1-3 sentences describing it, and a question they would like the crit to focus on.
● 4 days before the crit, the Lead emails the group a document containing all 6 artworks, descriptions, questions the artist would like addressed, and a rubric of how to review the works. (Members do not need to complete the rubric, it’s there for assistance). This allows everyone time to review the art in advance.
Day of the crit:
1. Welcome and review of crit structure and what is expected (10 minutes)
i. Describe (facts such as medium, size, etc.)
ii. Analyze (how the Elements of Art work together in the piece, what stands out)
iii. Interpret (what is the piece’s purpose – what is it saying)
iv. Evaluate (positive criticism of what works and what could be added)
2. Each of the 6 artists are allotted 10 minutes as follows (10 min x 6 artists = 60 minutes)
i. Each artists’ work gets critiqued by the Guest Reviewer for 5 minutes. During which time NCWCA members submit their comments via the chat function directly to the Lead
ii. Lead reads off members anonymous chat comments for 3 minutes.
iii. The artist has 2 min to talk and/or ask questions.
3. Wrap up & thank you (5 minutes)
