F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way:
A National Feminist Art Exhibition
Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art
Dec. 17, 2016 through Jan. 21, 2017
San Francisco, November 6, 2016 – Fifty-two artists, starting on December 17, 2016, speak out against misogyny, sexism, and discrimination in the provocatively titled exhibition, F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way, sponsored by the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art, a nonprofit, and taking place at Arc Gallery, 1246 Folsom St., San Francisco. Scheduled on the heels of a contentious Presidential election, the exhibition examines in raw detail how the artists react to patriarchy and shines a spotlight on women's identities and embodied experiences.
With works represented in all media, F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way examines the artists’ responses to sexism, discrimination, abuse, and harassment of all kinds. Increasingly, male sexual entitlement has been given the proverbial wink and nod, leading to crude discourse and even worse, sexual violence against women. The works of art in F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way highlight the importance of women having their say in their personal and professional relationships, as well as in the public sphere. The exhibition celebrates revolutionary visions about gender fluidity and women's voices, focusing on self-expression, self-respect, and self-care.
With a nod to the 1972 landmark Womanhouse installation, a collaborative feminist art project, about women's domestic roles and identities, F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way includes the works of four groundbreaking women artists from Womanhouse.
The Installation
The opening reception for F*ck U! In the Most Loving Way takes place from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17 at Arc Gallery. Exhibition hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. with it being closed on Sat. Dec. 24 and 31. Through the invitation to artists by Tanya Augsburg, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Humanities and Liberal Studies, San Francisco State University, the F*ck U! show features works by internationally-known contemporary artists Cheryl Dunye, Emma Sulkowicz, Violet Overn, Ester Hernandez, Rokudenashiko, and Sheila Pree Bright.
Augsburg has curated work by original Womanhouse artist Nancy Youdelman and filmmaker Johanna Demetrakas in the Revisiting Womanhouse exhibition space, a room within the gallery, and has invited Faith Wilding to perform an updated version of her iconic Waiting piece with collaborator, artist Viet Le. A video by Womanhouse documentary filmmaker, Johanna Demetrakas, will also be shown.
Works by featured artists will be joined by nationally submitted works of contemporary self-identified female artists, whose artistic responses range from affirmation, sadness, empathy, anger, humor, irony to confusion. For this exhibition, artists were selected by juror Shannon Rose Riley, M.F.A. and Ph. D., Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Humanities, San José State University.
