NCWCA POD TOUR OF SANSEI GRANDDAUGHTERS' JOURNEY
NCWCA members visited the "Sansei Granddaughters Journey: From Remembrance to Resistance" exhibition on Friday, August 19 at 11am at the AZ Gallery at the Shops at Tanforan. This exhibition featured the work of five third generation (sansei) Japanese American artists who dedicated their wide-ranging art careers to honor the legacy of the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. NCWCA saw a video created by the artists and attended an exclusive tour of the exhibition with the artists, Na Omi Judy Shintani, Shari Arai DeBoer, Ellen Bepp, Reiko Fujii and Kathy Fujii-Oka.
The shops at Tanforan are located in the former Tanforan racetrack in San Bruno , which became the Tanforan Temporary Detention Center in 1942. Nearly 8000 people of Japanese descent were forcibly removed from their home and imprisoned there in horse stables and barracks.
We also toured a memorial and permanent exhibition designed by Na Omi Judy Shintani at the San Bruno BART station.
