WE STAND IN SOLIDARITY

It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the murders of six Asian women at three spas in Atlanta, along with two other fatalities and one injury, in the shootings that occurred on March 16th, 2021. We say their names here: Daoyou Feng, Suncha Kim, Hyun Jung Kim, Soon Chung Park, and acknowledge the women whose families would like to protect the identities of their loved ones.

This heinous act is, tragically, only the latest in a string of hate incidents against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across our country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a troubling rise in racist harassment and violence against AAPI communities. We acknowledge:

  • Between March 2020 – February 2021, Stop AAPI Hate received 3,795 reports of anti-Asian hate incidents.

  • 68% of the incidents were reported by women. Women report incidents 2.3 times more than men.

  • People of all races and ethnicities were targeted including Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, Taiwanese, Hmong… Chinese are the largest ethnic group (42.2%) that report experiencing hate, followed by Koreans (14.8%), Vietnamese (8.5%), and Filipinos (7.9%).

  • California alone had 1,691 incidents, making up 45% of all reported cases.

These statistics are quoted from the 2020-2021 Stop AAPI Hate National Report (March 2021) which can be accessed here.

NCWCA’s mission is to create community through art, education, and social activism. Hate and bigotry have no place in our organization. We condemn these racist, violent acts in the strongest possible terms and encourage our members to do so as well. We stand in solidarity with the AAPI community and with all those who suffer from fear, harassment, and violence.
In honor of all those hurt by this tragedy, and to help our members take concrete action against racial injustice, we offer the list of resources below. There is much work to do in confronting and interrupting these acts of hatred, and the time to self-educate and act is now.
On behalf of NCWCA, we send our deepest condolences to those who knew and loved the victims and also to the entire AAPI community.
