THE GROUND UPON WHICH WE STAND
A Regional Juried Exhibition
April 15 - May 31, 2020

Welcome to The Ground Upon Which We Stand Online Exhibition in which Seventy-eight artists speak out about the sacredness of the land and the importance of standing your ground in this era of climate change. The Ground Upon Which We Stand also shines a spotlight on women's identities and embodied experiences with our only home, Planet Earth.

The past month has been a whirlwind of transition and uncertainty, and we know many of you are deeply affected by the Corona Virus crisis. Because a return to normal socializing cannot be determined, The Ground Upon Which We Stand Exhibition is online so that our artists’ voices can be heard. This exhibition is more relevant than ever, because the well-being of our planet is intricately interwoven with our own.

With works represented in all media, The Ground Upon Which We Stand offers messages to and from the planet through the artists’ examinations and responses to nature, environmental pressures, society and the fate of our only home, Planet Earth. The artworks engage on many levels – wonder, worry, hopefulness, activism. Some of the exhibit’s artists clearly oppose technology-industry-capitalism-globalization and advocate for a simpler way of life or a return to ancestral lifeways. Alternatively, some portray technology and globalization as compatible with environmental integrity, envisioning a future that ends pollution, over-crowding, and the extinction of species. Echoing Greta Thunberg’s call to action, The Ground Upon Which We Stand stresses that there is no plan B nor planet B.

It was an honor to be a co-juror with Robert Abrams, Abrams Claghorn Gallery Owner, and Natalie Borges, Abrams Claghorn Gallery Manager. I encourage you to support our artists and Abrams Claghorn Gallery (our generous host and a small business) by purchasing artwork, sharing this gallery with others, and purchasing the exhibition catalog with a forward by Laurie Rich, Executive Director, David Brower Center (available late-April).

Stay tuned for our related event, Environmentally Sound, formally a live performance and panel. This will be transformed into an online experience soon.
